Atkin's

Does anyone on here do the Atkin's diet?? I love it... I've lost 43 lbs on it. I just found out I'm pregnant and am wondering how I can still get the nutrients I need and continue doing Atkins...

In general, I think the Atkin's diet is a bad idea. For one things, you're excluding things from your diet such as whole grains, veg. & fruits, things that provide you with fiber and vitamins, etc. Being able to eat all the meat, eggs, cheese, whatever, sounds great, but you should be careful about too much saturatef fat. It can be easy to lose weight on a low-carb diet, but you may end up increasing your cholestrol, which has other health risks associated with it. A lot of weight lost on these diets is also water weight, something that will come back pretty quick if you ever go off the diet.

My advice would be to speak with either your doctor or a dietician about low-carb diets and pregnancy. Off the top of my head, I'd say they probly won't jive with each other, since during a pregnancy, you're supposed to gain weight.

There are plenty of sources of ample fiber on Atkin's... and it's been proven that being on Atkin's doesn't raise cholesterol ... for many it actually goes down...

since posting this question I decided to eat more carbs... but I'm still fairly conscious of how many I eat....

thereis a myth about cholesterol. the body does infact need cholesterol and saturated fat for that is what guards te heart muscle and other organs. old women who have high cholesterol live longer. what ll of us need to watch out for are all the hydrolizized oils and proteins and all fake processed foods and especially high fructose syrup and maltodextdrine and any sugar substitute except stevia and xylitol.

Atkins works well for those who have the blood type and/or metabolism for it...it is not for everyone. most people cannot digest carbs well and refined carbs are the downfall of most. we do not need all that grain or rice or pasta or wheat germ or oats etc.....but we all do need fruits and vegetables and gogs and gods of it...that is the real source of our fiber and vitamins.

for anyone eating meat i suggest they find a local butcher who sells meat without the antibiotics and which are grain or grass fed. if you eat supermarket meat be sure you are getting these minerals ...zinc, copper, selenium, magnesium. Almonds, sunflower seeds, brown rice and spinach are all good sources for it. And free range eggs are best also because they will have the omega 3's which all supermarket dsiry and meat are lacking in and which will then wear down your system. These minerals will also protect you from any madcow disease.

Do not use margerine and use butter only on vegetables.

also homogenized milk presents many dangers. if you use milk try and find a real cow and drink it raw. Bovine growth hormone has also shown up in mother's breast milk. it is dngerous to the heart muscle. eat vegetables and some fermented foods.

I've got my own opinions about the Atkins diet on it's own. But I can definitely say any "diet" is not healthy while pregnant. The baby will need a well-rounded, balanced plan of healthy foods. Good Luck!
